Laryngoscope is a scientific journal with a broad audience base and a long standing history of academic excellence. Since its debut under the leadership of Professor Dehui Wang, the Editor-in-Chief, Laryngoscope Chinese edition has received abundant positive reviews and responses from its audience. It has also enabled us to experience the exceedingly high level of quality displayed by the scholars from China. Laryngoscope Taiwan edition will uphold the vision from its Editor, and learn from the success of the Chinese edition. It is my desire that the Taiwan edition will also resonate among our readers in Taiwan, and provide different perspectives in which Chinese readers from abroad could review the work from Taiwan scholars through our selection of articles.

In recent years, the development in Otolaryngology has been very prominent and increasingly innovative. The clinical and academic advancements have been unprecedented, and there is a limitless blue ocean of opportunities ahead. Over the years, Otolaryngology has developed from microscopic surgery, nasal endoscopy, ear endoscopy, surgical navigation, cochlear implantation to the Da Vinci robotic system surgery which has been broadly applied in recent years. These are the evidence that Otolaryngology is moving towards higher level of sophistication and an increasingly functional and multifaceted development.

The Laryngoscope Taiwan edition has brought together an elite group of scholars from various Otolaryngology fields of research within Taiwan. Our editorial team will work together to unite intellect and build a pool of diversified excerpts, in order to create a journal that is practical and will be frequently read and cited. We hope that the Taiwan edition will be an international journal that will benefit medical doctors and scholars from across the strait.

Taiwan is located in one of the most densely populated part of the world. The beginning of Laryngoscope Taiwan edition signifies the birth of a platform that will elevate the competitiveness of this region and shorten the distance between Chinese scholars. Our editorial team would like to send our best wishes to all our readers, wishing you all the very best in your endeavour for medical excellence!

Greetings,

As the new Editor-in-Chief of The Laryngoscope as of October 2019, I am excited to continue our well-established relationship with Taiwan edition of The Laryngoscope. I am particularly enthusiastic about developing stronger international ties for our journal.

As you know, The Laryngoscope was first published in 1896, and is the official journal of the American Laryngological, Rhinological, and Otological Society (also known as “The Triological Society”), the American Laryngological Association, and the American Broncho-Esophagological Association.

The journal is published for The Triological Society by Wiley and has exceptionally high bibliometric indices including an impact factor of 2.343, and, of great importance, the highest lifetime H index (134), H-5 index (55), and Eigenfactor indices (just under .03) of all otolaryngology journals. The indices show, in an even more nuanced way, the strength of the journal.

We are also proud to have published many landmark papers in the specialty over many decades. A study of the Top 100 cited articles in Otolaryngology from the 20th century found that The Laryngoscope had more articles than any other journal (1). A follow-up article in 2017 found that this trend has continued with The Laryngoscope among the very top journals of the most cited articles in the field between 1985 – 2014 as well (2).

We publish clinical and basic research articles covering the entire spectrum of the specialty, and we are very selective, with an acceptance rate of approximately 25%. In addition to original articles (“Original Reports”), we publish brief evidence-based reviews on common clinical topics (“Trio Society Best Practice” articles), “How I Do It” articles and videos, and Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis of important topics.

I work closely with an outstanding group of Associate Editors, and a large Editorial Board to assist me in reviewing the continually increasing submissions we receive annually (2,600+ in 2018; trending towards over 2,900 in 2019), and approximately 60% of our submissions are from outside the U.S.A. The journal is available online (www.laryngoscope.com), with full access to the complete archives of the journal for subscribers, and features such as a compendium of past Trio Society Best Practice articles, and lists of Most Cited and Most Read articles.

In The Laryngoscope Taiwan edition, the local editorial team takes great care to select articles from recent issues of The Laryngoscope they believe will be of particular interest and usefulness, which I hope you will enjoy.

Sincerely,

Samuel H. Selesnick, MD, FACS
